A product currently undergoing final testing in USA, is the new Envoy that is designed to assist with the monitoring of cathodic protection of underground steel pipes where readings need to be taken every couple of months or so and communicated back to a central monitoring station. Previously the designers were looking at using super capacitors to provide log life power but they have now found a lower cost, easier alternative.
Testing has commenced for a new design for Cathodic Protection monitoring system for low velocity data collection. The device has a once per day 4 minute GSM session version (a 3G version can be made for Australia) of ENVOY that runs off AA size Lithium Iron Disulphide batteries for 4.6 years. The batteries have a 15 year shelf life, this equates to low cost. The devices will use an ultra low power Real Time clock as timekeeper.
This means no more Solar panels to get shot at. No more super capacitors with their super cost ..... and it’s all latest tech. Batteries give 0.6% per YEAR charge loss, very wide temp range.
It uses 6 x AA Lithium Disulphide 15 year batteries and can deliver one SMS exchange session daily for 5 minutes and last 4.6 years

This will do unpowered gas line monitoring in USA.
